Once again, a natural disaster has killed hundreds of people, maybe more. The landslide that hit the village of Guinsaugon on the island of Leyte in the Philippines on Friday February 17 took a whole community away. We share the shock of the whole world that so many lives, children and adults, can be swept away so speedily and with no warning.

We appeal to the international community to follow the examples of China, Australia and others and make foreign aid available to deal both with the emergency situation and the short and long-term recovery for the survivors.

It seems that disasters like this are often linked to disrespect for the natural environment. There are different views on whether logging has played a role in changing the conditions for the village of Guinsaugon, but the disaster is still a reminder to us all that we need to expand our knowledge about the interaction between human activities and natural conditions and do more to ensure we live in a way which is sustainable and respects human life.

Our thoughts are with the victims, the survivors and the people of the Philippines at this time of catastrophe. Once again so many poor children are among the victims ? young lives ending far too soon.

We also extend our support to our social work colleagues in the Philippines, who no doubt will be involved both in the immediate efforts to help the families involved and then in the process of finding a way forward to seek new homes and livelihood for them.
