Canada National Social Work Week 2006: Social Work: Advancing and Strengthening Communities

In March of every year, the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW), along with its member organizations and social workers throughout the country, celebrates National Social Work Week. Social work?s understanding of, commitment to, and involvement in communities across Canada is acknowledged by this year?s theme, ?Social Work: Advancing and Strengthening Communities?.

Communities are built on such criteria as geography, common interests and common goals. Strong communities are essential to the physical, social and emotional well-being of their members, and social workers believe that strong and healthy communities can exist only when the needs of a community are met and the rights of community members are respected.

Social work?s commitment to social justice, a guiding value of all social work practice, compels social workers, especially on the occasion of National Social Work Week, to call upon all levels of government to promote the well-being of Canadian communities by ensuring that the social issues that undermine the strength of communities, such as poverty and violence, are addressed.

This year CASW invites social workers and others to reflect upon the communities in which we are members and upon one?s own contribution, as well as the contributions of others, to those communities. Celebrate the strength of your communities. CASW encourages social workers, once re-energized by this strength, to continue using their knowledge, skills and values to advocate the advancement of local, national and global communities.
