Narrative therapy and community work originated in the mid-1980?s with Michael White in Australia and David Epston in New Zealand, both of whom had professional backgrounds in social work and community development. At the same time, parallel social work-inspired developments were occurring in the US (eg. Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer in Milwaukee and 'strengths based approaches' by Saleeby and Wieck in Kansas).

The social work profession has recently begun to recognize the potential of narrative practice and community work to revivify many of the foundational social justice concerns which originally gave rise to the social work profession. This recognition is reflected in such recent social work textbooks as: Understanding narrative therapy: A Guidebook for the Social Worker (Abels & Abels, 2001); Constructive Social Work: Towards a New Practice (Parton & Bryne, 2000); Collaborative Therapy with Multi-Stressed Families (Madsen, 1999); and Family Therapy: A Constructive Approach (Lowe, 2004).

The idea for a meeting in Cuba came through an invitation from the Cuban Association of Psychiatrists to David Epston to introduce narrative therapy and community work to social workers and mental health therapists in Cuba on the basis of a sense of kinship between narrative practices and existing Cuban practices of care. It was decided that instead of a one-sided 'workshop' or 'conference', a meeting would be held to explore the similarities and differences between narrative therapy and community work and Cuban social programs.

This meeting is envisioned as a first time gathering of social workers and other helping professionals from Cuba with their counterparts from other countries to share ideas and experiences related to narrative therapy and community work. For Cuban professionals, it will provide a much desired and up to now unavailable opportunity to receive training in narrative ideas. For visitors to Cuba, it will provide a rare opportunity to be introduced to Cuban approaches to dealing with social, health and community concerns. Registration will be limited to 200 Cubans and 200 visitors (100 Spanish speaking and 100 English speaking), with registration free to Cubans.

The conference will involve 3 full days of meetings, plus an additional (optional) two days of post conference workshops. Keynotes and workshops will be given by highly experienced speakers in narrative and community work from Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and hopefully, the United States, while the Cuban experience will be presented by leading professionals from that country.
