In order to share expertise and knowledge for the improvement of education and children’s services, the Department for Education and Skills in the United Kingdom (DfES) is convening a 3 day Symposium in Nairobi for practitioners and policy specialists drawn from the UK, East, West and South Africa. The objective is to gain an overview of the possible benefits of the integration of services for children and how this could overcome obstacles to educational and economic participation in the African context.

The Symposium is being organised by the Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) in partnership with the Commonwealth Organisation for Social Work (Kenya) and the Children’s Society (UK) and funded by the Department for Education and Skills.

The Symposium has these specific aims:

Social workers in sub-Saharan Africa face tremendous yet often similar challenges of imbalance and social inequality and it is very difficult for them to have an opportunity to find agreement and understanding of common goals and ways of achieving a new social equilibrium. The Symposium will provide an invaluable forum in which stakeholders involved in policy and practice can share information and discuss challenges. The Symposium will promote:

The Symposium will be organised around two themes: (i) Policy and Programme Implementation and (ii) Social and Economic Issues. On Day 1 each of these themes will be introduced through keynote and/or regional panels. Day 2 will then explore national responses that have worked under the two themes. Day 3 (a half-day) will focus on taking the responses that have worked and provide a means for collaboration that supports possible replication of these successes in other country settings.
